Whilstthecharacterisationanddialogueleavemuchtobedesired,theplot(amurkytaleofcruelrevengeandpoliticalintrigue)isgripping,andthefilm'sartisticdesignisexceptionalforafilmofthisperiod.Gancebringsastrangelyexpressionistictouchtohisuseofcolourandshade,somethingwhichaddstothedarklysinisternatureoftheplot,whilstimbuingthefilmwithastrikingsenseofhistoricalrealism.Apropos,Gance'sassistantdirectorNellyKaplanmakesherscreendébutinasmallrole,shortlybeforesheherselfembarkedonasuccessfulfilmmakingcareer.
